| For some weird reason we set out quite late that morning . We thought
we would pedal a quiet 60 km "in between" stage. But we hadn't read our
maps carefully. Anyway, the sun was shining and the mood was good. |
 |
| In the meantime the Berlin connection raced from Gletsch over the Sustenpass,
down to Andermatt, then over the Gotthardpass to Airolo. The next goal
for that day was the Nufenenpass and plans had been made for Georg and
Mike to take the train in Brig, while Cristoforo would join us for the
rest of the trip. It didn' quite work out that way. I'll post a first hand
account of their adventure as soon as they send it to me...

up the Grimselpass |
 |
| In spite of Enrico's ever hurting knee, we where quite fast until Guttannen.
There Lorenzo got seized by his competitive spirit and started to follow
some race minded bikers. He reached Grimselpass about 45 minutes before
the rest of us. It was very hot. The motorcycles helped us from time to
time by producing some wind as they passed us at high speed. |
 |
| After lunch on the Grimsel we ventured into the vague before we found
the downhill trail to Obergesteln. Check Cycling and MTB Map "Conches-Aletsch"
1:50'000 from Kümmerly + Frey. We reached Binn in the dark, after
loosing another sprint race to Lorenzo.Oh, by the way: The Germans and
Cristoforo where there too. A pity they haven't written up their story
yet, we laughed quite a bit! Georg and Mike left after dinner in a rented
station wagon. |
|
| At 9 PM the owner of the "Hotel Ofenhorn" suggested we have their standard
4 course dinner, as it was late and they had that ready. We accepted, which
was a great mistake. Had we only stuck to pasta! The night was a mare.
Most of us had some sort of stomach ache. Enrico spent half of the night
trying to find his fennel tea, and didn't look too good in the morning.
At 6 AM François and Cristoforo drove to Brig - a 3 hours return
trip - to fetch Cristoforo's rental mountain bike. Since he hadn't picked
it up the evening before, the SBB/CFF had already reserved it for someone
else, and it took them a lot of fighting and making phone calls to get
another bike. |
