 The Volvo 480 started very successfully in 1987 and was produced until 1995. In 1988 Volvo began selling the 5-door hatchback 440 and in 1989 it introduced the 4-door 460 - both on the same platform as the 480. In this case the egg came before the chicken: the shooting brake paved the way for the sedan. Available variants were S, ES and Turbo.
Ende der Siebziger beschloss Volvo, einen würdigen Nachfolger für den P1800 ES entwickeln. Aus einem Design-Wettbewerb und nach lanjähriger Entwicklungsarbeit entstand 1987 der Volvo 480. Kurz danach brachte Volvo die Modelle 440 und 460 auf den Markt, die auf der gleichen Plattform bauten. Der Vovo 480 hatte in Europa Erfolg; auf dem amerikanischen Markt, für den Volvo ihn entwickelt hatte, konnte er sich hingegen nicht durchsetzen.
Per una volta le cose sono andate all'inverso. Volvo sviluppò dapprima la 480 coupé / giardinetta e solo dopo, sulla stessa piattaforma, i modelli per il gran pubblico 440 e 460. La 480 conobbe un buon successo in Europa ma non riuscì ad imporsi sul mercato americano, per il quale era stata concepita.
